Uninsured motorist insurance
Uninsured motorists are those who drive a car without any liability insurance coverage. The latest data by the Insurance Research Council show that one in eight drivers on the road in the United States do not have liability insurance. Uninsured motorist insurance is purchased to protect against the negligence of other drivers who do not have liability insurance. If you are involved in an accident with someone who does not have liability insurance and you have purchased uninsured motorist insurance, your insurance carrier should pay for your damages capped by the policy limit of the uninsured motorist insurance you purchased. If you are not covered by uninsured motorist insurance then you are left with trying to get payment for your damages from the negligent uninsured driver.
Underinsured motorist insurance
Underinsured motorist coverage is car insurance coverage that pays your damages that exceed the liability insurance coverage of the negligent driver. The minimum liability coverage required in Texas for bodily injury is set by statute, and as of 2015 is set at $30,000.00 per person and $60,000.00 per accident. If your damages, (for example medical expenses and lost wages) total more than $30,000.00 and the negligent driver has a minimum limits liability car insurance policy, you will only receive a maximum of $30,000.00 for your bodily injury claim from the negligent driver’s insurance company. If you have purchased underinsured motorist coverage then you can receive additional money for your damages from your car insurance company, up to the policy limit of the underinsured motorist coverage you purchased. Underinsured motorist coverage is important insurance coverage in the case of severe injuries and in cases where more than two people are injured in an accident due to the negligence of a driver with minimum liability insurance.
